Welcome
Greetings,
Welcome to Visual Arts at John Herbert Phillips Academy! My name is William Davidson and I will be your child’s visual art teacher this year. I am so excited for the opportunity to teach your child about the world of art. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the University of AL at Birmingham and Master’s degree in Media Design from Full Sail University. I have been teaching for 10 years and have been in my field, graphic design, for over 13 years. I bring with me a wealth of knowledge about art from traditional art forms to digital art.
If at any time you feel the need to contact me, please feel free to email me at WDAVIDSON@BHM.K12.AL.US or you can call the office at 205-231-9500 to set up a conference with me during my planning period. I respond to emails within 24 hours, and I am always willing to address any concerns that you may have.
Art is a very project-based subject so homework will only be given 2-3 times during a nine-week period. The type of homework that will be given will be technique practice leading up to a major project or the basis of a particular art theory. The homework given in my class will be worth 10 percent of your child’s overall grade for the nine-week period. Some of the topics that your child will be introduced to in art class this year will be elements of art (line, color, shape, texture, etc.) and principles of design (harmony, unity, balance, rhythm, etc.).
All students are expected to give a 100% effort in all assignments and projects. The bulk of your child’s grade will be determined by their effort, creativity, and their ability to follow instruction. Please work with your child and ask them what they are learning in art. Projects will be sent home upon completion. Please look over the projects with your child and allow them to explain what they learned while doing the project. This will open the door to create a love for art and culture.
Thanks for allowing me to teach your child this year! I am looking forward to a great year!
Sincerely,
-Mr. Davidson
